Well, it may seem like a pile of construction waste to some people, but “dark art” Photoshop digital artists know better. This is a gold mine for blend mode work, which being located in the middle of the old “Gold Rush” territory in Colorado is appropriate language to use.
This set of textures is from the expansion of a four-lane highway behind my neighborhood. It’s the asphalt from a temporary road that was being used by the work crew’s trucks while the main road was being built. The mound is about 5 feet tall. Got a few stares as I walked around and on top of the pile taking pictures, but it was worth it. All for art, you understand.
The large pictures are 1600 X 1200 pixels (180 dpi) and over 1 mb each so they will load slowly, but they are high resolution, full of excellent light/dark contrast, and they’re free!

Well, I’ve decided to start selling some of my digital art and photography…
Four of my favorite photographs are being displayed at “Naturally Unique” on the north side of Colorado Springs. If you are in the area, go check them out. I have made an arrangement with the manager to put up some more (which I will) in the next few weeks. I have created art and photographs for friends and family before but this is the first time I have actually put anything up for public sale. Should be fun.

These prints are 12″ X 18″ on Kodak E-Surface paper (which I am very pleased with) printed at 300 dpi. If you are interested in buying one or more of them, click on the Print tab in the main menu. Shipping is free within the USA. I will have to calculate a small cost to ship outside of the States depending upon where you are.
Manitou Sky
I had been driving around all day in the mountains above Colorado Springs, Colorado on a heavily overcast day just waiting for the clouds to break up. I had practically given up as it was late afternoon but on my way home a small break in the clouds appeared and I went careening into a parking lot in Manitou Springs, jumped out of the car and got my tripod up. I was able to take 3 pictures before the clouds closed. No Photoshop on this one, it was awe-inspiring. This was the best one of the three.

One Stop
This is a long-abandoned store miles and miles right in the middle of nowhere on rt. 350 along the Sante Fe trail south of La Junta, Colorado. This is prairie country. The town is Timpas, I think. It’s a ghost town now. I’m not sure if the town is inhabited at all any more. Sure didn’t see anybody in any direction when I took the picture.

Otero Cemetery
The Otero graveyard in the county with the same name. An erie, sad place to walk around in. The white gravesite crosses are two pieces of painted metal rectangular rod welded together. There are some small pictures and descriptions near some of the graves. You leave the site a little quiet. Black and white digital print from color negative film.

Pikes Peak from Divide
A shot from a side road from rt. 24 almost to the town of Divide, Colorado of the “back” of Pikes Peak. The wind and clouds were moving so fast from west to east (right to left) that I wan’t sure the clouds would have a little blur, but they aren’t bad. Used an open shutter.

Round 3 offering 15 more free cracked textures for Photoshop blend modes.
These cracked earth textures have gotten so popular that I collected images that I had not posted yet and took a few more new ones. They’re from the same construction site that’s behind my neighborhood. The work on the new houses has virtually stopped because on the economic downturn. Bad for jobs but great for mud puddles that eventually dry and with the weird earth and sand around here leave excellent cracks.
The individual texture images are 1200 X 900 pixels and about 1MB each. When you download them, they’re yours. They’re free. Enjoy!!

Sorry I’ve not kept my promise and posted a 2nd Photoshop displacement map tutorial, or uploaded more textures (which are still on my hard drive). I’ve been busy submitting entries in logo design contests. The contest atmosphere becomes addictive and you get the chance to use Adobe Illustrator which seems to take an undeserved back seat to Photoshop most of the time in popularity.
I’ll upload some of my other runner-up entries for various contests in my portfolio.
Here’s a png of the winning Illustrator file and a link to the contest:

Thoughtful, lonely skies. It was dark all day and the cloud formations were changing quickly. If you let yourself, staring at them would put you in a retrospective state of mind. Probably due to the shades of blue-gray.
The pics are 1600 X 1200 and are free to do with what you wish.
I’m going to take a break from posting skyscapes and textures for a while and do a few Photoshop tutorials that I had promised. Until then.
